FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions
Where do you get the information that you're sending me and what does it cover?

Recalls are published on the Food Standards Australia website. We filter the recall information to your state, extract the most important information (product name, expiry date, and reason for recall) and send it on to you as a text message. All this within a minute of the recall being issued.

What countries is this available in?

Right now, only in Australia.

Won't the food company or the retailer tell me if I've bought contaminated food?

Legally, food companies have to provide a notification when their product has been recalled. But in practice, these notices can be as simple as an A4 piece of paper stuck behind the counter at the supermarket , so they are very easy to miss. Once the recall is published, it's on the consumer to inform themselves about it.

How many messages will I get? How often will you ping me?

Any time there is a recall of a food or beverage product in your state. In the first half of 2025 there were 38 food recalls, and you get a notification each time there's a recall in your state (or nationally). For QLD in 2025, you would have received around 1 message every 1 or 2 weeks.

Who are you guys?

We are Scientific Microservices, an independent data science studio developing lightweight scientific services and microservices for the public good.

Why should I trust you?

We're PhD qualified scientists, we've worked with State-level food safety authorities, and we care about getting things right. More importantly, the information you're getting doesn't come just from us; it comes from Food Standards Australia New Zealand, via our microservices. You can always cross-check the notice you get from us against the FSANZ official recall website.

I want to stop the messages. How do I do that?

Please contact us and we'll handle it for you.

What information do you need from me?

Your phone number, so we can send you reminder messages; and your state of residence, so we can send only the recalls that are relevant for you.

How much is it?

It's $24 for a year's worth of alerts (equivalent to $2 per month).

Can I give this service as a gift?

Yes. Enter the recipient's phone number at checkout. If you want to receive the messages yourself and forward them, enter your own number.

What will you do with my sign-up information? Is it safe?

We use your phone number to send you alerts with food safety recall information. Your number is stored on a secure database and only used for this purpose. We don't send anything else and we don't share your information.

What sorts of things will I get alerts for? Does this cover all food recalls or just certain reasons for recall?

Food safety recalls are issued for: presence of mould, foreign object contamination (metal, plastic, glass, rubber), microbial and biotoxin contamination (Salmonella, E.Coli, Listeria), undeclared allergens (milk, eggs, gluten, soy, nuts, sesame, sulphites, seafood), chemical contamination, prohibited botanicals and unapproved novel ingredients.
